Mindset Masters the team, and our school’s policy was to allow everyone who wanted to play the right to be on the team. This policy was good in theory, but as you know, one bad apple can destroy the whole bunch. The other captains and I created a system for weeding out bad attitudes and bad apples. We took it upon ourselves to create a code, a system for weeding out bad influences on our team and our culture. People fail. Systems and codes don’t. The system was clear and the code was unwritten. We had a code of attitude, a code of thinking, a code of conduct, a code of being a valuable participant on an elite team. Our unique code had everything to do with you taking personal responsibility for your attitude and actions on and off the field. Your attitude and actions had to be for the greater good of the whole team, or you just didn’t last. If you complained during practice, you were asked to leave immediately, no questions asked. You were allowed back the next day after apologizing to everyone for your bad attitude and complaining. If you were a repeat complainer, you were asked to hand in your jersey and equipment immediately, no questions asked. If you did not keep your grades up, you were asked to leave the team. High expectations lead to high results. Our mission was simple -‐ WIN! I helped co-‐create a high standard of attitude, actions and conduct to be a part of our organization. If you did not meet the standard, you were asked to step down as a member of our team. The code and attitude demanded if you wore our colors, you had to have a winning outlook and attitude in several areas of your life to stay on our team and play in our games. 110
