Mindset Masters What I mean by “fake it” is to act as if you possess what it takes to succeed at a task, even though on paper, you don’t. It’s that simple. For example, when I started doing voiceovers for my company TheVoiceActress.com, I loved voicing corporate training videos the most. I loved the “real” dialogue I was reading and not the fake stuff that I was used to reading for so many TV commercials and infomercials. Scripts that you just knew were full of hot air. Corporate training scripts were factual, interesting, I always learned something new, they paid well, and they gave me more consistent work. Plus, I could be myself and use my natural voice and personality, which felt very nice versus acting spastically happy in an infomercial spot where I had to sound like a new type of sponge was going to change the world…one sponge at a time. The trick was finding how I could get more corporate training work. All the websites, services and agents were just flooded with voice talent. How did I go GET it? I decided to behave as if I was a part of the corporate training world, which I of course was not…yet. I realized I had to go swim with the fish in that industry, but how? I decided to go be one of them. I signed up for the local chapter of their national association, which was tricky enough to find in the first place. Then, I showed up at their meetings and acted as if I was supposed to be there. Imagine, sitting at a table full of people THAT HIRE people that do what I do! I was the only one of me (voice talent) in the entire room of over 100 people that create and design corporate training programs for their company and hire people like me! I was swimming with the fish…but did they notice? 52
