Mindset Masters my pageant competitions. No one ever taught her these things, she just did them because something inside her said, “Hey, maybe I could do this “and she did. She did them so well I was always in awe of the results. Everyone was. I never doubted for a moment that if she set out to do something, it WAS going to happen. I remember hearing a phrase that she’d say with a smile before heading out to conquer her day, “fake it till you make it!” At the time I heard it, I didn’t really get it. But boy do I get it…and her, now. That’s what she always did. Not having the skills, the needed qualifications, the available time while raising three kids, a degree, or funds-­‐-­‐-­‐and as she saw it, lacking the support of her spouse-­‐-­‐ just did not deter her. With an internal engine like a caboose, I literally saw her joy when tackling things that with all odds against her, she did anyway. I often wonder if she looked for things that scared her, just to do them. Conquering them was like fuel for her. Going back to college to get a degree in her sixties was one of those times where her fear of not being smart enough or being too old just didn’t stop her. She did it anyway. She acted as if she fit right in and was right where she was supposed to be, until she believed it. Having not set out on purpose with a “fake it till you make it” mentality, it sort of just stuck to me after being witness to its effects growing up. And through the years, that phrase has taken on a life of its own in my life. It flows through my being with a clear message; do it anyway. Behave as if you know how to do it, have done it, can do it and believe it. 51
