Let’s look atthe two basic age groups and their agecharacteristics.9-12 Years of Age• Large muscles• Organic systemic development• Purposeful thinking13-15 Years of Age• Age of sexual development• Jumping ability increases• Body grows larger• Growth of major muscle groups• Development of major muscle groups• Joints become stronger and firmer• Functional disharmony• Techniques not stable• Improvement of braking reactions• Abstract thinking• Ability to analyzeFor these age groups, we should emphasize thedevelopment of agility, speed and cooperation.When one thinks of dry land training, the firstthought which usually enters the mind is hard work,running for miles and general drudgery. This shouldnot be the case at all, especially with the youngerage groups. Coaches have the responsibility ofproviding a program that will not only enhance thephysical development of a young player, but alsocreates a healthy environment rich in fun activities.Most of our youngsters participate in sports otherthan hockey. This is healthy and should beencouraged. To be a good hockey player, one mustbe a good athlete.Not all players will want to participate in a dryland training program, especially during the offseason.This program is for those who wish toparticipate.
