T A B L E O F C O N T E N T SPrefaceThroughout the United States, the sport of ice hockey has grown in interest and participation. With an attempt to meet the coaching education demands of all our volunteer coaches, USAHockey provides a comprehensive Coaching Education Program. Since 1974 the CoachingEducation Program has been evolving on an ongoing basis, and during that time USA Hockey hasconcluded the following:1. Quality coaching is the single most important factor in the development of our athletes as wellas the sport itself.2. The experience a player will gain through participation in ice hockey is directly influenced bythe coaches’ qualifications as well as their coaching education background.3. The curriculum, materials, and manuals of the coaching education program must be keptsimple, practical, age specific, and user friendly. It is also the intent of USA Hockey that, through a comprehensive but practical educationalsystem, the organization will meet the educational needs of our volunteer coaches. This manual represents a part of the new direction which will take USA Hockey’s coachingprogram into the 21st century. Although this manual represents something new in the coachingeducation program, it also contains general coaching effectiveness methods and ice hockeyspecific material from USA Hockey’s first manual Fundamentals of Coaching Youth Ice Hockey, which has been updated and revised so that it may be incorporated into this manual. Therefore, gratitude is extended to Dr. Vern Seefeldt, Paul Vogel, Keith Blase, Lou Vairo, Dave Peterson, KenJohannson, as well as other authors involved in the first Associate Level Manual.Sincere appreciation is also extended to the many people who contributed to this publication. Also, a special thanks to USA Hockey’s Coaching Section, Youth Council, Legal Council and theCurriculum Committee. Finally, I would like to thank Val Belmonte (former Director, CoachingEducation Program) for his vision and hard work that he put forth in the Coaching EducationProgram.
