T A B L E O F C O N T E N T SSLIP AROUNDThe slip around should be executed in thefollowing manner. First, fake right, and slip puckaround the defender’s right side. Pull the stick backand skate around the left side of the defender. Pickup the puck and be ready to jump over thedefender’s stick. This series of moves is illustrated inFigure 6.Key Elements• Make a good fake to commit the defensiveplayerCommon Errors• Not getting the defensive player to commitbefore executing the moveSuggestions for CoachingPlayers must be encouraged to acceleratequickly as they change direction. The timing on thismove is important and therefore, many practicerepetitions are often necessary to master this ability.Again, work on developing the move going in bothdirections.FAKE SHOTThe fake shot is used to slow down or freeze thedefender, allowing the offensive player to advancearound him/her easily. It is initiated by shifting thepuck to the forehand side and initiating a wrist orslap shot motion. A shoulder drop or lower handslide is beneficial to create the deception. The puckis then shifted to the forehand or backhand side. This is illustrated in Figure 7.Key Elements• An effective fake shotCommon Errors• Telegraphing that the shot is a fakeFigure 7. Executing the Fake Shot.Suggestions for CoachingThis move is especially useful when thedefender has slowed down or stopped in hisdefensive zone.THE MAGIC WANDThe magic wand is a very deceptive move, andprobably has its origins in European hockey. It iscalled the “magic wand” because the attackingplayer “waves” his stick above the puck, as if todribble from side to side, never touching it. (Figure8). This tends to freeze the opponent.Figure 5. Execution of the Slip AcrossFigure 6. Slip AroundThis fake movement of the puck, combined witha head or shoulder fake, often catches the defenderleaning or committing to one direction or the other. At this moment, the attacker may play the puck tohis forehand or backhand and accelerate around theopposition (Figure 8).226 | USA Hockey Coaching Education Program Level 3 ManualOffensive Team Tactics | 227
