A collapse <strong>of</strong> the partnership wasavoided through refram<strong>in</strong>g term<strong>in</strong>ology that enabled them to recognise thevalue <strong>of</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>ed engagement with<strong>in</strong> the framework <strong>of</strong> their own objectives.As Everts reflected (21/04/08):„It is not just how you do monitor<strong>in</strong>g and evaluation but howyou expla<strong>in</strong> it to people com<strong>in</strong>g from different worlds. Youneed to show <strong>in</strong> clear terms what a company is go<strong>in</strong>g to getout <strong>of</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g monitor<strong>in</strong>g and evaluation. There has to be ademonstrable benefit <strong>for</strong> them <strong>in</strong> non-ambiguous language. Itis so important that Eduvision really understand what we‟redo<strong>in</strong>g and the value <strong>of</strong> it. We framed the benefits <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>creased company exposure, product feedback, genu<strong>in</strong>epartnership, <strong>in</strong>creased accountability, show<strong>in</strong>g how it haspotential to change the whole nature and culture <strong>of</strong> thecompany. Eduvision needs a better product, monitor<strong>in</strong>g andevaluation completes the feedback loop, it is closely related toResearch and Development, it promotes and demonstrates<strong>in</strong>tegrity and is attractive to funders.‟In the light <strong>of</strong> this, phrases such as „capacity development‟ and„empowerment‟, although staple term<strong>in</strong>ology with<strong>in</strong> the development world,were substituted when communicat<strong>in</strong>g value <strong>in</strong> favour <strong>of</strong> emphasis<strong>in</strong>g„product feedback‟, „research and development‟ and „return on <strong>in</strong>vestment‟.6.5.2 Communicat<strong>in</strong>g effectivelyOn a related note, <strong>in</strong>itial <strong>in</strong>teractions with ECBP demonstrated that theterm<strong>in</strong>ology specific to monitor<strong>in</strong>g and evaluation was also unfamiliar tocerta<strong>in</strong> partners and that this resulted <strong>in</strong> an exclusive environment. Midwaythrough the <strong>in</strong>itial outl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> methodological approaches to one partner, theproject lead from ECBP <strong>in</strong>terjected with the question, „what do you mean by afocus group?‟ This highlighted the extent to which language used with theobjective <strong>of</strong> communicat<strong>in</strong>g aims and objectives actually marg<strong>in</strong>alised anumber <strong>of</strong> partners.
