It is important that the test is conducted as fairly as possible and that noschool has an advantage over the other. Because <strong>of</strong> this, please do not tell theteachers <strong>in</strong> the school that we will be com<strong>in</strong>g back <strong>in</strong> December to test thechildren aga<strong>in</strong> – and please do not leave any question papers with theteachers <strong>in</strong> the school. This is very important because it would give theteachers the opportunity to prepare <strong>for</strong> the test the next time around.There is one test that the children need to complete and it is split <strong>in</strong>to twodifferent sections. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the first section is to test the atta<strong>in</strong>ment<strong>of</strong> the children on different subjects. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the second section (titled„worldview‟) is to f<strong>in</strong>d out the children‟s op<strong>in</strong>ion on various topics The firstsection is a conventional test. Please make it very clear to the children thatthe second section is not an exam or a test – we just want the childrento write their op<strong>in</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> response to the questions.Checklist <strong>of</strong> key issues <strong>for</strong> Basel<strong>in</strong>e testPlease ensure the follow<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs be<strong>for</strong>e you beg<strong>in</strong> the test:Expla<strong>in</strong> to the children that no one <strong>in</strong> the school will read what theyhave written, they can be honest and will not get <strong>in</strong> trouble <strong>for</strong> whatthey answer.Make sure that the children understand that the first section(regard<strong>in</strong>g their op<strong>in</strong>ion) is not a test and there are no right and wronganswers.Make sure that the children do not have opportunity to copy from oneanother (spread the children out around the room and ensure theycannot see what each other are writ<strong>in</strong>g).Do not allow the teachers to assist the children as they complete thebasel<strong>in</strong>es. If any <strong>of</strong> the children have a question, please address ityourself and give the same level <strong>of</strong> assistance <strong>in</strong> each school.Make sure that the students know how much time they have tocomplete the test and that they are given the same amount <strong>of</strong> time <strong>in</strong>each school.Make sure that the basel<strong>in</strong>e tests are conducted at the same time <strong>of</strong> the485
