Larger schools, that is, those with over 400students, tend to have lower take-up rates than smaller schools due mainlyto LCA students making up a smaller proportion in larger schools.Furthermore, disadvantaged schools are 8 times more likely to have hightake-up than non-disadvantaged schools, all else being equal. The mainregional effect evident is the sharp divide between Dublin and otherregions; Dublin schools have significantly higher take-up of LCA thancomparable schools in other regions. 53.5Drop-outFrom theLCAProgrammeThe introduction of the LCA programme was motivated by the desire toretain ‘at risk’ young people within the full-time educational system (seeChapter 1). This section explores the extent to which young people leavethe LCA programme before completion. No published data are availableon the extent of drop-out from the LCA (or any other LC) programme.However, the extent of early leaving can be inferred from other datasources.First, an estimate of attrition within senior cycle can be derived bycomparing the numbers of participants in year one of a programme withthe number of participants in the programme in the following year. It isevident that attrition varies by programme type; in 2007, attrition rates were25 per cent for LCA participants, 12 per cent for LCVP participants and 6per cent for LCE participants (Figure 3.14).
