EIE-Surveyor1Institutional po<strong>in</strong>t of viewIn France, there are several k<strong>in</strong>ds of academic <strong>in</strong>stitutions:• Universities, which propose:- Classical curricula: Licence (bachelor), 3 years, followed by Master, 2 years.Generally the master is organised <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g way:- 1 st year of Master which is quite general- 2 nd year of Master which could be professional or research-oriented.After the master, it is possible to apply for a Doctorat, whose the normal duration is 3years.- Professional curricula♦ Superior Technician level (Diplôme Universitaire de Technologie - DUT) prepared<strong>in</strong> Institut Universitaire de Technologie - IUT,♦ Industry-oriented bachelors ("licence professionnelle"), this is just the 3 rd yearafter the 2 first years of licence or DUT or a BTS.2♦ Graduate schools of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g which prepare eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g graduation(Diplôme d'Ingénieur); the Master grade is automatically associated with thisdegree.• • Graduate schools of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g ²- Classical graduate schools of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, which offer 3 year courses. Thestudents are selected, on the base of a contest, after a "classe préparatoire"curriculum (Classe Préparatoire aux Gr<strong>and</strong>es Ecoles - CPGE); the duration of CPGEcurriculum is usually 2 years.- Integrated graduate schools of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> which most students spend fiveyears <strong>in</strong> the same school <strong>in</strong> order to get their eng<strong>in</strong>eer qualification.• Secondary schoolsSecondary schools (<strong>in</strong> French lycées) offer two k<strong>in</strong>ds of academic studies:- CPGE see above,- STS (Section de Technicien Supérieur) prepar<strong>in</strong>g students towards BTS (Brevet deTechnicien Supérieur), Superior Technician level.These curricula prepared <strong>in</strong> "lycées" are not detailed <strong>in</strong> this study.Degree po<strong>in</strong>ts of view• The degree m<strong>and</strong>atory to enter the Higher Education system is "Baccalauréat", which isdelivered at the end of the secondary school.In France, this degree permits to apply to the academic system.
