EIE-SurveyorThere are 6 higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong> the field of EIE; all of them are public university type<strong>in</strong>stitutions. Public <strong>in</strong>stitutions are f<strong>in</strong>anced by the state budget by the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Education, Youth <strong>and</strong>Sports. The private higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutions could be partially f<strong>in</strong>anced by the state. In addition,the Czech higher education system <strong>in</strong>cludes 4 state higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutions. There are threemilitary higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>and</strong> a police academy. These <strong>in</strong>stitutions are f<strong>in</strong>anced by theM<strong>in</strong>istry of Defence <strong>and</strong> the M<strong>in</strong>istry of the Interior. All higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutions provide accreditedstudy programmes which are assessed by the Accreditation Commission.There are three university level studies:• Bachelor studies (Bc. = "Bakalář"):The st<strong>and</strong>ard length of study <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is at least three years <strong>and</strong> at most fouryears. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the Higher Education Act there is no difference between bachelor studies atuniversity <strong>and</strong> non-university type <strong>in</strong>stitutions. The bachelor study programmes cover all ma<strong>in</strong>discipl<strong>in</strong>es, except <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e, veter<strong>in</strong>ary medic<strong>in</strong>e, pharmacy, architecture <strong>and</strong> law. It isconceived either as an <strong>in</strong>dependent course whose graduates are fully qualified for particularprofessions or as the first stage of longer studies whose graduates can cont<strong>in</strong>ue towards themagistr degree. This cycle leads to the academic degree of "Bakalář" (Bc.) or "Bakalář umění"(BcA.) <strong>in</strong> the field of arts which was <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong> January 1999. Students must sit for a f<strong>in</strong>alstate exam<strong>in</strong>ation, part of which is also the defence of the bachelor thesis.• Master studies (Mgr. = "Magistr"):The st<strong>and</strong>ard length of study is at least four <strong>and</strong> at most six years. Master study programmesmay represent a cont<strong>in</strong>uation of bachelor study programmes; should this be the case, thest<strong>and</strong>ard length of study is at least two <strong>and</strong> at most three years. The master study programmes<strong>in</strong> the humanities, education <strong>and</strong> social sciences, natural sciences, pharmacy, theology, law <strong>and</strong>art last for five years <strong>and</strong> lead to the title of "Magistr" (Mgr). In economics, agriculture <strong>and</strong>chemistry, studies last for five years <strong>and</strong> lead to the academic degree of "Inženýr" (Ing.). Ineng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, studies last between five <strong>and</strong> five-<strong>and</strong>-a-half years <strong>and</strong> also lead to the degree of"Inženýr" (Ing.). In architecture, veter<strong>in</strong>ary medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e, studies last for six years.Graduates <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e obta<strong>in</strong> the degree of "Doktor medicíny" (MUDr) <strong>and</strong> of "Doktor veter<strong>in</strong>árnímedicíny" (MVDr) <strong>in</strong> veter<strong>in</strong>ary medic<strong>in</strong>e. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the 1998 Act, graduates of masterprogrammes <strong>in</strong> architecture are awarded the title of "Inženýr architekt" (<strong>in</strong>g. arch.) <strong>and</strong>graduates <strong>in</strong> the arts the academic degree of "Magistr umění" (MgA). The new Act enablesholders of the title of magistr to sit for a state exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> the same field <strong>and</strong> defend adissertation to acquire the academic degree of Doktor followed by the name of the field "Doktorpráv" (JUDr), "Doktor filosofie" (PhDr), "Doktor přírodních věd" (RNDr), "Doktor farmacie"(Phar.Dr.) <strong>and</strong> "Doktor teologie" (ThDr).- 76 -
