Two cycles- Bachelor: duration 8 semesters (4 years) for technical higher education- Master: duration 3 or4 semesters (1.5 or 2 years, m<strong>in</strong>imum 90 credits)2. Generalization of <strong>Europe</strong>an Credits Transfer System (ECTS)3. Doctoral studies: with attendance (3 years) or without attendance/part-time attendance (3...5 years)The old EIE higher education system <strong>in</strong> Romania:- undergraduate programmes, duration 3 years or 5 years (degrees awarded: "Bachelor ofEng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g" or "Diplomat Eng<strong>in</strong>eer" respectively)- postgraduate programmes, duration 1…2 years or 4…6 years (degrees awarded: M.Sc., or Ph.D.respectively).The old <strong>and</strong> the new EIE higher education system <strong>in</strong> Romania is go<strong>in</strong>g concomitant, but s<strong>in</strong>ce 2005has organized admission only for new undergraduate programme <strong>and</strong> new doctoral studies. Masterdegree is organized under the old rules (for 2007 <strong>and</strong> 2008).The higher education <strong>in</strong> Romania is public <strong>and</strong> private, but private universities don’t cover <strong>Electrical</strong><strong>and</strong> Information Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education doma<strong>in</strong>. Each year M<strong>in</strong>ister of Education <strong>and</strong> Researchestablish a number of students which will be admitted without fee by public Romanian universities. Buteach university can enrol a limited number of students with fee.The Faculties from EIE doma<strong>in</strong> aim the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g electrical, electronic, automation, <strong>in</strong>formationtechnologies, <strong>and</strong> electromechanical eng<strong>in</strong>eers able to function <strong>in</strong> all sectors of economy. The EIEfaculties further ensures, with few exceptions, the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> electrical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, electronics,automation <strong>and</strong> computers science of the students of the other, non-electrical faculties of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>gfrom universities.Currently more than 30,000 students are registered for the EIE education offered by the Romanianfaculties.The teach<strong>in</strong>g staff of the EIE faculties comprises more than 2000 professors, associate professors,lecturers, assistants <strong>and</strong> junior assistants, of which more than 1000 hold Ph.D. degrees.S<strong>in</strong>ce the academic year 1998 the ECTS has been adopted at the Romanian Universities <strong>and</strong> till 2005the eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g curricula for undergraduate programmes was based on the structure that consists of 2cycles:1. first cycle of 2 years (4 semesters);2. second cycle of 3 years duration (6 semesters).S<strong>in</strong>ce the academic year 2005 the eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g curricula for undergraduate programmes are based onthe structure that consists of 2 cycles:1. first cycle of 2 years (4 semesters);2. second cycle of 2 years duration (4 semesters).The program of the first cycle envisages fundamental technical education. At the EIE Faculties, thefirst cycle curricula are not <strong>in</strong>dividualized on specialization branches <strong>and</strong> consist of generaleng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education courses.Usually, tak<strong>in</strong>g a competitive written test <strong>in</strong> algebra <strong>and</strong> mathematical analysis, geometry,trigonometry or physics ensures entry <strong>in</strong> the first year of undergraduate studies (Bachelor).
