SupervisionIn an <strong>in</strong>itial phase, the University of Luxembourg implemented a strict policy for grant<strong>in</strong>g authorizationfor the management of research to its academic staff, thus enabl<strong>in</strong>g them to establish who, at theUniversity of Luxembourg, has the capacity to supervise a research <strong>project</strong> or a doctoral thesis.In a second phase, the faculties proceeded to set up <strong>and</strong> organise research units (RU). A RU is madeup of one or more laboratories, <strong>and</strong> its objective is to use <strong>and</strong> share a common team with a high levelof expertise, research <strong>and</strong> scientific activity so as to foster <strong>and</strong> encourage adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>vestment synergies. Doctorate students are supervised by the academic staff of the RU hav<strong>in</strong>g theauthorization for the management of research. The RUs develop work around the research <strong>project</strong>s.PhD student- Registration procedureEligibility for Admission:You can HUenrol UHfor the Ph.D. degree, without nationality requirement, if you hold a second-leveluniversity diploma or foreign diplomas <strong>and</strong> degrees HUentered <strong>in</strong> the register of titlesUH at the M<strong>in</strong>istry ofCulture, Higher Education <strong>and</strong> Research (valid only for <strong>Europe</strong>an c<strong>and</strong>idates or any c<strong>and</strong>idateresid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Gr<strong>and</strong> Duchy of Luxembourg).How to be a doctoral c<strong>and</strong>idate at the University of LuxembourgTwo possibilities:Case 1 : Assistant1. Reply to a recruitment advertisement (mention<strong>in</strong>g the advert reference)2. Once the c<strong>and</strong>idate has been selected, the dissertation director sends the follow<strong>in</strong>g documents toSEVE: “request to accept a doctoral c<strong>and</strong>idate/ dem<strong>and</strong>e d'acceptation d'un étudiant doctorant” <strong>and</strong>“task description for an assistant <strong>in</strong> the non-professorial teach<strong>in</strong>g staff/ configuration de tâche pourassistant du corps <strong>in</strong>termédiaire.”3. The c<strong>and</strong>idate completes the registration documents <strong>and</strong> sends them to SEVE4. The Rector confirms the recruitment of the c<strong>and</strong>idate <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g.5. Before sign<strong>in</strong>g the contract, the future assistant proceeds to the def<strong>in</strong>itive registration with SEVE6. The assistant’s contract is signed at the Human Resources Department7. The dissertation supervision committee must be communicated to SEVE with<strong>in</strong> 2 months afterregistrationCase 2: Scholarship holder (BFR*) or doctoral c<strong>and</strong>idate work<strong>in</strong>g on a <strong>project</strong>1.
