EIE-SurveyorThe four-year variant of the undergraduate programme will typically be a Master of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g(MEng). This programme can also be <strong>in</strong>creased to five years by add<strong>in</strong>g a year <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry to form a‘s<strong>and</strong>wich’ degree. The Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Master of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g areall undergraduate or First Cycle programmes (FCD).FCDs are typically graded us<strong>in</strong>g pass, ord<strong>in</strong>ary, third class, lower second class, upper second class<strong>and</strong> first class classifications, although not all academic <strong>in</strong>stitutions use all of them. Some <strong>in</strong>stitutionsuse a Pass/Fail classification for MEng programmes.Upon completion of an undergraduate programme any student can, subject to meet<strong>in</strong>g certa<strong>in</strong>conditions, undertake a postgraduate Masters programme, the duration of which is usually one-yearfull time. The conditions of progression relate to the relevance of the first cycle degree to the subject ofthe second cycle degree <strong>and</strong> to the level of academic achievement of the student <strong>in</strong> the first cycledegree, entry conditions are all set by the HE <strong>in</strong>stitution offer<strong>in</strong>g the higher degree. Masters degrees <strong>in</strong>the United K<strong>in</strong>gdom can be either taught or by research. Also, upon completion of an undergraduateprogramme <strong>and</strong> subject to the student achiev<strong>in</strong>g upper second or first class honours, a student canundertake a three-year Doctoral programme. Both the Master <strong>and</strong> Doctorate programmes are SecondCycle Degrees (SCD).A wide range of variations is possible. Students can defer entry to higher education afterschool/college <strong>in</strong> favour of employment, return<strong>in</strong>g to the academic system at any stage. In a similarway, a break can be taken between the FCD <strong>and</strong> the SCD. Both the FCD <strong>and</strong> SCD can be taken parttime, although part time FCDs are less common. The Open University also offers the facility toundertake modules of study <strong>and</strong> build up a FCD over a larger number of years.25.1.1 U<strong>Electrical</strong> <strong>and</strong> Information Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> United K<strong>in</strong>gdom, boundaries of the field ofstudyOne of the def<strong>in</strong>itions possible for EIE lies <strong>in</strong> the way <strong>in</strong> which a student would select a course with<strong>in</strong>an academic <strong>in</strong>stitution. UCAS organises the first cycle degrees offered by UK <strong>in</strong>stitutions us<strong>in</strong>g a hierarchywith<strong>in</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>e areas. A search of related key words to EIE reveals the follow<strong>in</strong>g hierarchy <strong>and</strong> hencelist of courses that lie with<strong>in</strong> the EIE general area.
