EIE-Surveyor11.3.1 USub Honours Bachelor Degree LevelIn Irel<strong>and</strong> at Sub Honours Bachelor Degree level, there are two recognised qualifications, a HigherCertificate (level 6) <strong>and</strong> an Ord<strong>in</strong>ary Degree (level 7).(a) A Higher Certificate <strong>in</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g is a two-year ‘ab <strong>in</strong>itio’ programme. The student effortrequired should be such as to merit 120 ECTS credits. On completion, the graduate is referred to asan Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Technician <strong>and</strong> should be competent to apply <strong>in</strong> a responsible manner proventechniques which are commonly understood by those who are expert <strong>in</strong> a branch of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g orthose techniques specially prescribed by professional eng<strong>in</strong>eers. He/she works under guidance with<strong>in</strong>their allocated responsibility. National Certificate programmes are generally offered by the Institutes ofTechnology <strong>and</strong> programmes related to EIE currently on offer (see Section 11.1.1) <strong>in</strong>clude:UElectronicsU –(Electronics 38%, maths 14%, telecommunications 7%, computers 8%, science 6%, technology 7%,<strong>project</strong>s <strong>and</strong> labs 8% <strong>and</strong> complementary studies 12%).UElectronic <strong>and</strong> Computer Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>gU –(Electronics 25%, maths 14%, computers 34%, telecommunications 5%, science 3%, technology 7%,<strong>project</strong>s <strong>and</strong> labs 7% <strong>and</strong> complementary studies 5%).UElectronics <strong>and</strong> CommunicationsU –(Electronics 29%, maths 13%, computers 15%, telecommunications 18%, science 4%, technology 10%,<strong>project</strong>s <strong>and</strong> labs 7% <strong>and</strong> complementary studies 4%).(b) An Ord<strong>in</strong>ary Degree <strong>in</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g is a three-year ‘ab <strong>in</strong>itio’ programme or a one year postHigher Certificate programme. He/she exercises<strong>in</strong>dependent technical judgement <strong>and</strong> works with significant autonomy with<strong>in</strong> his/her allocatedresponsibility.
