EIE-Surveyor• Conditions for admissionThe nom<strong>in</strong>al duration is set to 3 years. There is a large variation <strong>in</strong> real duration from college tocollege. Some colleges have close to 40% dropout, while others have only 10%.• Structure of the Bachelor programmesThe basic structure for the three-year “bachelor” study program is shown below. The differentstudy programmes are listed <strong>in</strong> Appendix B.Master levelThe M. Sc. degree is recognised by the professional environment, <strong>and</strong> provides access to all k<strong>in</strong>ds ofeng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g professions <strong>in</strong> Norway. It is also recognised as the entry-po<strong>in</strong>t for a doctoral degree.• Conditions for admissionThe basic condition for admission is successful exam<strong>in</strong>ation results from upper level secondaryschool, with sufficient course load <strong>in</strong> mathematics <strong>and</strong> physics <strong>and</strong>/or chemistry. But as all M.Sc.programmes have limited numbers of places, the exam<strong>in</strong>ation marks are used to select thoseadmitted. The marks <strong>in</strong> mathematics <strong>and</strong> physics are given highest weight. In addition, somepo<strong>in</strong>ts are granted for work experience <strong>and</strong> completion of military service. Also, female studentsare given a small additional advantage. The admission to most eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g subjects at theNorwegian Institute of Technology is very competitive.In addition to direct entry from upper secondary school, the Norwegian Institute of Technologyallows a certa<strong>in</strong> percentage (approx. 20-25%) <strong>in</strong>to the third year with a completed B. Sc. degreefrom one of the colleges of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.• Nom<strong>in</strong>al <strong>and</strong> real duration of the studiesThe nom<strong>in</strong>al duration of M. Sc. studies is 4.5 years. The real duration at the Norwegian Institute ofTechnology is 4.7 years, <strong>and</strong> the completion rate has been stable at about 91% (def<strong>in</strong>ed as thepercentage of students, once entered, who f<strong>in</strong>ish with a diploma).Doctorate levelIn pr<strong>in</strong>ciple we have now only one type of doctorate degrees <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Norway, the PhD.• Condition for admissionA completed “Master” degree or similar education is required, <strong>in</strong> addition to a course <strong>and</strong> researchplan endorsed by a supervisor.• Prerequired or simultaneous doctoral programmeThe programme <strong>in</strong>cludes a certa<strong>in</strong> workload based on courses <strong>and</strong> a thesis. Normally, the c<strong>and</strong>idateworks on both these at the same time. The course load corresponds to one full year of study, whiletwo years are allocated for the research <strong>and</strong> thesis work. At least one third of the courses are to be atdoctorate level, the others may be selected from the normal graduate courses.- 339 -
