EIE-Surveyor11.1.1 U<strong>Electrical</strong> <strong>and</strong> Information Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong>, boundaries of the field of studyEng<strong>in</strong>eers Irel<strong>and</strong> covers all eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g discipl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>and</strong> therefore there are no specific EIE"boundaries". Bachelor of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g programmes currently accredited <strong>in</strong> the EIE area <strong>in</strong>clude:<strong>Electrical</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, Electronic Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, Computer Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, Microelectronic Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g,Telecommunications, Software <strong>and</strong> Information Systems Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.11.1.2 UContent, degrees <strong>and</strong> accreditationsEng<strong>in</strong>eers Irel<strong>and</strong> has been designated as the national authority competent to regulate theeng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g profession <strong>in</strong> the Republic of Irel<strong>and</strong>. This <strong>in</strong>cludes responsibility for evaluat<strong>in</strong>g theeducation <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> fulfilment of this obligation the Institution formally accreditseng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g degree programmes <strong>in</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong>.Eng<strong>in</strong>eers Irel<strong>and</strong> do not review programmes for accreditation until after the programme produces itsfirst cohort of graduates. Thus there are a number of other EIE related programmes, which havecommenced <strong>in</strong> the past few years <strong>and</strong> which, though not accredited at present, are likely to beaccredited at the appropriate time <strong>in</strong> the future.In addition there are a number of other B.Eng., B.Sc. <strong>and</strong> B.Tech. programmes <strong>in</strong> the EIE area offeredby the Universities <strong>and</strong> particularly by the Institutes of Technology, which for a variety of differentreasons have not been submitted for accreditation to the IEI.Eng<strong>in</strong>eers Irel<strong>and</strong> gives some guidel<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> relation to core content, which should <strong>in</strong>clude:(i) Foundation StudiesMathematics, basic sciences, basic eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g sciences <strong>and</strong> technology, computer technology(ii) Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g StudiesEng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g sciences <strong>and</strong> technology appropriate to the eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g discipl<strong>in</strong>e. Analysis,modell<strong>in</strong>g, measurement, design <strong>and</strong> test<strong>in</strong>g techniques <strong>in</strong> an appropriate range of subjects.Opportunities for specialisation <strong>and</strong> selected advanced study.(iii) Complementary StudiesCommunications skills, languages, <strong>in</strong>dustrial, social <strong>and</strong> environmental aspects of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.However, even with these guidel<strong>in</strong>es, the Universities still have a lot of freedom <strong>in</strong> def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the content<strong>and</strong> structures of their own programme. Details of the contents of each of the programmes can beobta<strong>in</strong>ed from the <strong>in</strong>dividual Universities, all of whom also have their own websites.- 226 -
