General informationThis description commences with a summary of the conventional HigherEducation system in the UK. This is then followed by an overview of someof the variations on the theme that can occur. The general view of the UKhigher education (HE) system is described in figure 25.1 although this is asimplified version of the real picture of access to higher education. A fullerdescription is given in section 25.X. The UK has been using a NationalQualifications Framework (NQF) 1 for a number of years now and this isdescribed after figure 25.1 together with a comparison of the UK NQF withthe European Qualifications Framework (EQF) 2 and the Dublin Descriptors 3 . Also referenced are theUK’s specific output standards for Engineering 4 .
