General <strong>in</strong>formationThis description commences with a summary of the conventional Higher Education system <strong>in</strong> Malta.This is then followed by an overview of some of the variations on the theme that can occur.School SystemBased on 5 years primary <strong>and</strong> 5 years secondary education lead<strong>in</strong>g to the SEC (secondary educationcertificate as managed by the matriculation board (MATSEC).Post SecondarySixth form for two years lead<strong>in</strong>g to the Matsec certificate which comprises two advanced level subjects<strong>and</strong> three <strong>in</strong>termediate level subjects or higher secondary for students who do not atta<strong>in</strong> the gradesrequired for sixth form.University or PolytechnicAfter obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g their Matsec certificate plus atta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the required grades as dem<strong>and</strong>ed by the Facultyof Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g or the Faculty of ICT students are admitted to the first cycle of studies lead<strong>in</strong>g to theB.Eng (honours) degree or the BSc (ICT) degree normally at the age of 17 or 18.FCDs are typically graded us<strong>in</strong>g pass, ord<strong>in</strong>ary, third class, lower second class, upper second class<strong>and</strong> first class classifications.Until the year 2006 most degrees were based on a four year first cycle followed by a 12 month cycle toobta<strong>in</strong> an MSC or a Master of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g degree but <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with the Bologna guidel<strong>in</strong>es degrees arebe<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>and</strong>ardised as well as harmonised to a 3 + 2 system.The second cycle lead<strong>in</strong>g to a MSc or an M(Eng) is normally of two years duration <strong>and</strong> is consideredas be<strong>in</strong>g the second cycle of tertiary education . Second cycle courses are of three types. Master byresearch through a thesis, masters through taught courses <strong>and</strong> a dissertation <strong>and</strong> a conversionMasters.Second cycle courses are classified as with dist<strong>in</strong>ction, merit Pass or Fail.After the second cycle students can register for a three year doctoral program. However uponcompletion of an undergraduate programme <strong>and</strong> subject to the student achiev<strong>in</strong>g a first class honours,a student can register directly to a four Doctoral programme.
