EIE-SurveyorBologna process <strong>in</strong> <strong>Europe</strong>The previous Erasmus Socrates programme (until 2007) was based on the signature of a bilateralagreement between two <strong>Europe</strong>an <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong> a specific discipl<strong>in</strong>e. In this way, the two <strong>in</strong>stitutionswere encouraged to respect the set of rules related to the implementation of the ECTS which is acredit accumulation system <strong>in</strong> the Lifelong Learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Europe</strong>an programme.Consider<strong>in</strong>g the eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g field Figure 1 shows the evolution of mobility of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g students.200001500010000500001987198919911993199519971999200120032005Figure 1The Kerst<strong>in</strong> Janson’s survey [1], has shown clearly that an Erasmus mobility is an important factor <strong>in</strong>improv<strong>in</strong>g qualification, competencies <strong>and</strong> professional success of our students but at the same timehis work underl<strong>in</strong>es the need for transparency <strong>and</strong> the availability of the necessary <strong>in</strong>formation beforethe ERASMUS period for the selection of host High Education Institution. Another importantrecommendation was to ensure a systematic procedure of recognition at the departmental <strong>in</strong>stead of<strong>in</strong>dividual recognition to avoid a duplication of the procedure.To participate <strong>in</strong> the Erasmus programme under the new <strong>Europe</strong>an commission programme (LifelongLearn<strong>in</strong>g Programme 2007-2013), all higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutions have to get an Erasmus UniversityCharter [2]. For this application, the higher education <strong>in</strong>stitution is required to develop <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude anErasmus Policy Statement which will be published <strong>and</strong> given wide visibility with the <strong>in</strong>ternationalstrategy def<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the mission statement of the <strong>in</strong>stitution.2. Difficulties encountered dur<strong>in</strong>g the mobility agreementpreparation.Submissions for Erasmus mobility are usually required <strong>in</strong> the year before the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g period <strong>in</strong> whichyou have to study, but the process of f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g a correspond<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitution <strong>and</strong> the right contact <strong>and</strong>design<strong>in</strong>g a good proposal can take a significant time <strong>and</strong> represent a considerable workload for the- 26 -
