Setting Up the VM and Installing the Guest OS 533A virtual machine instance implemented with Virtualization is called a domain. Twoprograms are available for setting up a domain and installing the guest OS on the virtualmachine: an interactive command-line utility virt-install and a graphical applicationnamed Virtual Machine Manager (virt-manager).For a para-virtualized host, only network installation types (NFS, HTTP, and FTP) can beused for the installation of the guest OS. However, you can export the installation treefrom the same system that is hosting the guest VM. Instructions for setting up for anetwork installation are provided in Chapter 1, “Installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux.” Fora fully virtualized host, an ISO image on the host filesystem, installation CD set, or DVDmust be provided as the installation media.TIPVirtualization log files are located in the /var/log/xen/ directory. Refer to thesemessages if an error occurs during creation or management of the virtual domains. With the Virtual Machine ManagerTo create the VM using a graphical interface, start the Virtual Machine Manager by executingthe virt-manager command or selecting the Applications menu on the top panel ofthe desktop and then choosing System Tools, Virtual Machine Manager. If you are notthe root user, you will be prompted for the root password before continuing. As shown inFigure B.2, select Local Xen host and click Connect. Even though it is seen as an optionin the interface, connecting to a remote Virtualzation host is not yet implemented.BFIGURE B.2Connecting to the Virtualization HostTo open the program without the ability to create new domains or modify existingdomains, select the Read only connection option. In read-only mode, you can view thelist of active domains and view the graphical and serial consoles for them, but you cannotmodify their settings such as the amount of memory dedicated to them. After connecting to the Virtualization host, all guest domains on the host are shown, with Domain-0 being the host OS running on the system. If no VMs are running (as isthe case the first time you run the program to create the first VM), only Domain-0 islisted (see Figure B.3).
