Performing the Installation 256. Optionally, select whether to force the partition to be a primary partition. This isnecessary for some partitions such as /boot/efi on Itanium systems.7. Click OK to return to the partition list.1FIGURE 1.12Creating a Standard Disk PartitionSetting Up LVM During InstallationLVM, or Logical Volume Manager, is a storage management solution that allows administratorsto divide hard drive space into physical volumes (PV), which can then be combinedinto logical volume groups (VG), which are then divided into logical volumes (LV) on whichthe filesystem and mount point are created. Refer to Chapter 7 for a more detailed explanation. To partition with LVM during installation either allow the installation program to createthe default layout or create a custom layout.TIPInstead of creating logical volumes from scratch, you can allow the installationprogram to create the default layout and then modify it to your specifications. To create the LVM layout from scratch, use the following steps:1. Create a standard disk partition for the /boot partition because it can’t be within aLVM (or a /boot/efi partition for an Itanium system) as described in the previoussection “Setting Up Basic Partitions During Installation.”2. Create the physical volumes (PVs). A PV must be created for each physical harddrive you want to use for logical volumes. Click New again, except this time selectphysical volume (LVM) as the filesystem type as shown in Figure 1.13. Click OK toreturn to the partition list. Repeat this step for each PV needed.
