394CHAPTER 19Explaining Other Common Network ServicesFIGURE 19.2Connecting to an FTP ServerUnder the Optional information section, the following can be configured:. Port: Specify the server port to connect to if different than the default FTP port 21.. Folder: The folder to open after logged in to the FTP server.. User Name: The username to use for authentication when connecting. You will beprompted for the password later. Only shown when FTP (with login) is selected.. Name to use for connection: Connection name to use when labeling the mountpoint in the Places menu and on the desktop.Click Connect to establish an FTP connection. An icon will appear on the desktop usingthe name of the server or, if provided, the name in the Name to use for connection field.A shortcut is also listed under the Places menu item in the desktop menu. Double-clickingon the desktop icon or selecting the shortcut item in the Places menu will open a filebrowser window with the files from the FTP server. Depending on your file permissionsfrom the server, you can open, copy, delete, and rename files and directories, and more.To unmount the share, right-click on its desktop icon and select Unmount Volume. If theshare is not unmounted, it will remain in the Places menu on reboot, but you must reauthenticateto access the share after rebooting.Logging FTP ConnectionsIf the xferlog_enable directive in vsftpd.conf is set to YES, file transfers using the FTPprotocol are logged to /var/log/xferlog. The default value for this directive is NO, but thesample configuration file installed on <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Hat</strong> <strong>Enterprise</strong> <strong>Linux</strong> enables it. Informationsuch as a time stamp, IP address of the client, the file being transferred, and the usernameof the person who authenticated the connection is included in the log entry.To modify the name of the log file, set the xferlog_file directive in vsftpd.conf to thefull path and filename of the alternate log file.The log file is rotated every week, and four weeks of backlogs are kept as configured bythe /etc/logrotate.d/vsftpd.log file.
