152CHAPTER 6Analyzing HardwareListing DevicesPCI and USB devices can be probed for information such as an identification number,chipset revision number, and amount of on-board memory. This information can then beused to properly configure the driver and settings used for the device.This section discusses the lspci utility for listing PCI devices and the lsusb command forprobing USB devices for information.Listing PCI DevicesMany devices such as network and video cards are attached to the PCI bus. It is importantthat the operating system load the correct driver for each device so that the proper devicesettings are configured. For example, if your server contains a Gigabit network cardconnected to a Gigabit network switch, you can use a few simple Linux utilities to verifyand, if necessary, change the transfer rate of the NIC.To list all the PCI buses on the system and all the devices attached to them, use the lspciutility from the pciutils package.
