228CHAPTER 10Techniques for Backup and Recovery. Whether to use compression (GNU zip) or no compression. If compression is used, whether to compress the files on the client or server. Priority level if all backups can’t be performedAll of these options and more are configured in user-defined dumptypes in theamanda.conf file on the backup server. There are some predefined dumptypes in theexample amanda.conf file to use as a reference. Each dumptype is given a unique nameand can optionally be based on a different dumptype. To base a dumptype on one alreadydefined, list the name of the existing dumptype as the first parameter of the definition. Aparameter can be redefined in the new dumptype, overriding the value in the originaldumptype for clients using the new dumptype. For example, Listing 10.3 shows anexample dumptype named tar-compress. It includes the parameters from the globaldumptype definition and adds archiving with tar and fast compression on the client.LISTING 10.3Example Dumptypedefine dumptype tar-compress {globalprogram “GNUTAR”comment “tar and compressed”compress client fast}The possible dumptype parameters are listed in Table 10.3.TABLE 10.3 Dumptype ParametersDumptypeParameters DescriptionauthAuthentication scheme between server and client.
