CHAPTER 3Operating SystemUpdatesThis chapter focuses on software updates and softwareinstallation. Two methods are discussed to download andinstall or update software from Red Hat Network servers:the Red Hat Network website and YUM (both thecommand-line utility and two graphical programs).Chapter 2, “Post-Installation Configuration,” guided youthrough the Setup Agent, including registering your Red HatEnterprise Linux system with Red Hat Network (RHN). EveryRed Hat Enterprise Linux subscription includes access to theRed Hat Network Update module for software updates.IN THIS CHAPTER. Navigating Through the RHNWebsite. Assigning Users for the RHNWebsite. Subscribing to RHN Channels. Performing Actions onIndividual Systems from theRHN Website. Using System Groups on theRHN Website. Retrieving Software from RHNwith YUMIf you did not register your system with RHN during theSetup Agent, go to https://www.redhat.com/apps/activate/to activate your subscription if it hasn’t already been activated. Then, run the rhn_register command on thesystem. If you aren’t logged in as the root user, you will beprompted for the root password before continuing. If youhave more than one system to register, be sure you use thesame login (the one associated with your RHN entitlements)to register all of them. The systems cannot bemanaged, provisioned, or monitored together as a group ifa different login is used for each one. Additional logins canbe created for the organization and allowed access tospecific systems or system groups. To receive updates via RHN, each registered system must beentitled to a valid subscription. Each Red Hat EnterpriseLinux subscription includes an RHN entitlement. If thelogin used has available entitlements, the system is automaticallyentitled when it is registered. If there are no availableentitlements associated with the account when asystem is registered, you must purchase an additionalentitlement for the system and associated it with the newlyregistered system before receiving updates.
