ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AT YOURHANEY PLANTATION35Forestry remained important and is now focused on pulp and paper production. Intern<strong>at</strong>ionalPaper opened the st<strong>at</strong>e’s first plant in Georgetown in the 1930s. Of all industries, forestry has leftthe most noticeable impacts on the South Carolina landscape. Thousands of acres of pine trees,numerous sc<strong>at</strong>tered woodyards, and large pulp and paper mills make up this industrial complex.This industry continues to flourish (Kovacik and Winberry 1987: 187-188).Today most of the Waccamaw River plant<strong>at</strong>ions are being developed into residential orcommercial districts. The Pee Dee River area near Yauhannah Bluff, however, continues to remainfairly undeveloped. Several large tracts of land in the interior of Georgetown County are beingused as hunting preserves and for forestry.
