ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AT YOURHANEY PLANTATION73FEATURE 55 – HISTORIC POSTFe<strong>at</strong>ure 55 is a squarish stain measuring 0.7 by 0.7 feet and extending 0.5 feet into subsoil. Fillconsisted of dark grayish brown (10YR3/2) loamy sand. Artifacts consisted of two residualprehistoric sherds, 129.3 grams of brick rubble, one hand wrought nail fragment, three cut nails,four cut nail fragments, four panel bottle fragments, and one fragment of plain white graniteware.The graniteware has a beginning d<strong>at</strong>e of 1842, indic<strong>at</strong>ing th<strong>at</strong> this fe<strong>at</strong>ure was cre<strong>at</strong>ed in the midto l<strong>at</strong>e 19 th century.FEATURE 56 – HISTORIC SMEARFe<strong>at</strong>ure 56 is an amorphous stain measuring 0.6 by 0.5 feet and extending 0.3 feet into subsoil.The fill consists of dark grayish brown (10YR2/2) loamy sand. This fe<strong>at</strong>ure is part of a largerprehistoric stain th<strong>at</strong> encompasses Fe<strong>at</strong>ure 54 discussed above. Artifacts consist of two fine sanderoded decor<strong>at</strong>ed sherds, one fine sand check stamped sherd, one fine sand tempered fabricimpressed sherd, one medium sand tempered fabric impressed Mount Pleasant sherd, 15 residualsherds, one rhyolite thinning flake, one rhyolite flake fragment, one hand wrought nail, and onepiece of aqua bottle glass.FEATURE 58 – HISTORIC POSTFe<strong>at</strong>ure 58 is a circular post measuring 1.1 by 1.1 feet and extending 0.8 feet into subsoil. The fillconsists of very dark brown (10YR2/2) loamy sand. Artifacts consist of six Mount Pleasant cordmarked medium sand tempered sherd, one Deptford cord marked coarse sand tempered sherd,one square shanked nail, two white salt glazed stoneware sherds (1740 – 1775), and onefragment of blue decor<strong>at</strong>ed delft (1700-1800). The historic ceramics suggest th<strong>at</strong> the fe<strong>at</strong>ure wascre<strong>at</strong>ed in the second half of the 18 th century.FEATURE 59 – POSTFe<strong>at</strong>ure 59 is an oval post measuring 1.1 by 0.7 feet and extending 1.2 feet into subsoil. The fillconsists of very dark grayish brown (10YR3/2) loamy sand. No artifacts were recovered from thisfe<strong>at</strong>ure. An OCR d<strong>at</strong>e of 1763 was obtained from this fe<strong>at</strong>ure.FEATURE 60 – POSTFe<strong>at</strong>ure 60 is a circular post measuring 1.3 feet in diameter and extending 0.2 feet into the subsoil.The fill consists of brown (10YR5/3) loamy sand. Artifacts consist of one Deptford Check Stampedsherd and two residual sherds. The absence of historic artifacts suggest th<strong>at</strong> it may be prehistoricin origin.FEATURE 61 – HISTORIC POSTFe<strong>at</strong>ure 61 is a square post measuring 0.5 by 0.5 feet in size and extending 0.5 feet into thesubsoil. The fill consists of dark brown (10YR3/3) loamy sand. Artifacts consist of two ThomsCreek plain fine sand tempered sherds, one Wilmington/Hanover plain grog tempered sherd,three residual sherds, one metavolcanic flake fragment, one hand wrought nail, and onepharmaceutical bottle fragment. An OCR d<strong>at</strong>e of 1842 was obtained from this fe<strong>at</strong>ure.
