ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AT YOURHANEY PLANTATION75FEATURE 62 – HISTORIC POSTFe<strong>at</strong>ure 62 is a squarish post measuring 1.0 by 0.6 feet and extending 0.5 feet into the subsoil.The fill consists of brown (10YR4/3) loamy sand. Artifacts consist of one rhyolite interior flake, sixThoms Creek plain fine sand tempered sherds, one Mount Pleasant plain medium sand temperedsherd, one Refuge dent<strong>at</strong>e stamped medium sand tempered sherd, four residual sherds, and oneball clay pipe bowl fragment.FEATURE 64 –HISTORIC POSTFe<strong>at</strong>ure 64 is an oval post measuring 1.1 by 1.2 feet and extending 1.0 feet into the subsoil. Thefill consists of dark grayish brown (10YR3/2) loamy sand. Artifacts consist of two Thoms Creekplain medium sand tempered sherd, and 12 residual sherds. This fe<strong>at</strong>ure intrudes into Fe<strong>at</strong>ure 67,which is historic.FEATURE 66 – HISTORIC TRENCHFe<strong>at</strong>ure 66 is a linear stain measuring 5.2 by 0.6 feet in size and extending 0.3 feet into thesubsoil. The fill consists of very dark grayish brown (2.5Y3/2) loamy sand. There is a mottledarea to the east of it containing some light olive brown (2.5Y5/4) loamy sand. Artifacts consist ofone Woodland plain medium sand tempered sherd, one Deptford plain coarse sand temperedsherd, one eroded decor<strong>at</strong>ed fine sand tempered sherd, one eroded decor<strong>at</strong>ed very coarse sandtempered sherd, and one chert interior flake. In addition, there are two residual sherds classifiedas colonoware, although it is possible they are prehistoric in origin. Regardless, the orient<strong>at</strong>ion ofthe fe<strong>at</strong>ure with magnetic north, which is consistent with historic structure wall alignments, stronglysuggests th<strong>at</strong> this fe<strong>at</strong>ure is historic in origin.FEATURE 67 –HISTORIC PITFe<strong>at</strong>ure 67 is an oval pit measuring 2.5 by 2.7 feet and extending 1.0 foot into subsoil. The fillconsists of very dark grayish brown (10YR3/2) loamy sand. Prehistoric pottery consists of oneThoms Creek combed/scraped fine sand tempered sherd, three Thoms Creek plain fine sandtempered sherds, one Pee Dee curvilinear complic<strong>at</strong>ed stamped medium sand tempered sherd,eight Woodland plain medium sand tempered sherds, one eroded decor<strong>at</strong>ed medium sandtempered sherd, two Wilmington/Hanover fabric impressed grog tempered sherds, and 21residual sherds. Two pieces of debitage consisting of one rhyolite flake fragment and one quartziteflake fragment were also recovered. Historic artifacts consist of three Lesesne colonoware sherds,two Yaughan colonoware sherds, three residual colonoware sherds, and one piece of undecor<strong>at</strong>eddelft (1700-1800). The delft and colonoware sherds suggest a mid to l<strong>at</strong>e 18 th century origin forthe fe<strong>at</strong>ure. A small amount of charcoal was also recovered from this pit.FEATURE 68 – HISTORIC POSTFe<strong>at</strong>ure 68 is a square historic post measuring 1.1 by 1.0 feet and extending 1.2 feet into thesubsoil. The fill consists of very dark grayish brown (10YR3/2) loamy sand.
