Description of the Existing Environment• A COSEWIC designation of Endangered or Threatened automatically results in a CanadaGeneral Status Rank (Canada rank) of At Risk in Nunavut.• May be at Risk - Species that may be at risk of extirpation or extinction and are thereforecandidates for a detailed risk assessment by COSEWIC, or provincial or territorialequivalents.• Sensitive - Species that are not believed to be at risk of immediate extirpation orextinction but may require special attention or protection to prevent them from becomingat risk.• Secure - Species that are not believed to belong in the categories Extirpated, Extinct, AtRisk, May Be at Risk, Sensitive.• Undetermined - Species for which insufficient data, information, or knowledge isavailable with which to reliably evaluate their general status.2. SARA Designation (www.speciesatrisk.gc.ca)• Species listed in Schedule 1 are protected under SARA as of proclamation in June 2003.These species were assessed by COSEWIC using the revised assessment criteria. The listclassifies the species as being extirpated, endangered, threatened, or a special concern.Species listed in this schedule were assessed prior to October 1999, and require reassessmentusing the revised criteria, following which the Governor in Council may, onthe recommendation of the Minister, add the species to the Federal List of WildlifeSpecies at Risk.• Schedules 2 and 3 Species listed in these schedules were assessed prior to October 1999,and require re-assessment using the revised criteria, following which the Governor inCouncil may, on the recommendation of the Minister, add the species to the Federal Listof Wildlife Species at Risk.3. COSEWIC Ranking (www.cosewic.gc.ca)• Endangered - A wildlife species facing imminent extirpation or extinction.• Threatened - A wildlife species likely to become endangered if limiting factors are notreversed.• Special Concern - A wildlife species that may become a threatened or an endangeredspecies because of a combination of biological characteristics and identified threats.• Data Deficient - A category that applies when the available information is insufficient (a)to resolve a wildlife species' eligibility for assessment or (b) to permit an assessment ofthe wildlife species' risk of extinction.• Not At Risk - A wildlife species that has been evaluated and found to be not at risk ofextinction given the current circumstances. The likelihood occurrence rankings were as follows: Confirmed - Species observation confirmedfrom baseline studies, Likely - Occurs in project area but not detected during baseline studies,Possible - Range occurs within 200 km buffer of project area, Shipping - Range occurs alongmarine shipping route.January 2008 Hackett River Project – Project Proposal Sabina Silver CorporationReport Version B.1 6–17 Rescan Environmental Services Ltd.
