112The major objective of the current application is to continue the fundamentalwork to investigate the possibility of processing and utilizing thesolid waste generated by the mining and metallurgical processing industry,by incorporating these wastes into the proposed composite tailings mine fills,either in the fill matrix as a complimentary binder or as aggregates via anagglomeration process similar to CBTA and ATPF processes. The long-termobjective of the proposed work is to develop green technologies for the miningand metallurgical industries for “zero-waste”. This would be of direct benefitto these industries, and may result in a novel and safe waste processing,utilization and disposal technology to improve the mine environment in asustainable manner.

Thiswork will outline a number of key areas of work to investigatetelerobotic technology and its impact on themining process, the operations and the minerals wemine. Telerobotics offers many opportunities for Canadianresearchers around the world. This specific workwill focus on three main questions:1. How many machines and/or machine types can a single operator rungiven instantaneous (virtual) communication?2. How does one cause a group of machines to work together to accomplisha piece of work?3. Given that an operator can be telepresent on a machine from any locationin the world and operate second-generation teleoperations instantaneously,how does this effect what the technology looks like and whatcan be mined?The Telerobotics Laboratory where we will be conducting most of theseexperiments will be a unique facility that links Laurentian University andCambrian College through a high bandwidth network to allow study of theseparticular areas. A teleoperation chair will be connected via a fiber opticnetwork to the Cambrian College “E Dome” to test scale telerobotic systems.With these facilities in place this investigation will lead to developing newand innovative systems for mining and a redefinition of what can becomeore.
