One of the strategically most importantparameters of any underground mine is its size, or productioncapacity. The size of the mine, and the resultant mine-life, have aprofound impact on mine economics. As the mine size increases, economiesof scale are realized and the unit production cost decreases. This trend continuesuntil an upper limit for the size of the mine is reached, beyond which theunit production costs start going up, due to the excessive mine developmentcosts, relative to the available reserves. Further, the mine layout becomes toodense and complex, causing logistic and operational problems with the flowsof production, materials, and air. This indicates that there exists an optimasize for a mine that will result in maximum economic benefits within the mine’slifetime. It is crucial to design a mine to its optimum size, since once amine is fully developed, it is difficult and prohibitively expensive to radicallychange a design that has already been virtually “carved into hard-rock.”The objective of the proposed research is to optimize not only the capacityof the mine, but also its lifetime production schedule as well as its cut-offgrade policy. The optimization tools will be Dynamic Programming (DP), asthe optimization platform; and the simulation of the ore, materials, and airflows, as the means for obtaining credible cost inputs for the DP model. Theproposed optimization approach will be applicable not only in the design ofnew mines, but will also serve as a means of:
1151. continually verifying the capacities, production schedules and cut-offgrade policies of the existing mines; and2. detecting the need for, and the timing of, a major mine reconstruction.Since the cost of developing an underground hard-rock mine can easily exceed$100 million, the global savings achieved through the optimization ofmine size, its production schedule, and its cut-off grade policy cannot beoveremphasized.
