Data of previouschemical analysis of the soil and vegetation samples collected by previousstudies has indicated that nickel, copper, sulphur, and to a lesser extent, arsenic,and selenium concentrations are elevated in Sudbury and that theseconcentrations decrease with distance from the smelting works. The impoverishedplant communities that are currently found in the Sudbury area arenot only structurally and floristically different from the plant communitiesfound elsewhere in the region, but they appear to have a different geneticmake-up and low level of genetic diversity. To compensate for losses of forestlandsin areas negatively affected by past pollution and mining activities,land reclamation programs that include afforestation with primarily coniferspecies have been implemented. However, seed source identity, especially inspruce is a main problem in such reforestation/afforestation programs. Moreover,preliminary data shows some genetic instability of tufted hair grassesgrowing in contaminated areas receiving S0 2 and metal particulate emissions.The proposed study aims at establishing the linkage between genetic instabilityand heavy metal accumulation; developing molecular markers to monitorthe identity and purity of spruce samples used for reforestation/afforestation;and determining and increasing genetic diversity in plant populationsgrowing in contaminated areas.The project will provide more accurate information to design a viablestrategy to improve long-term site sustainability.
