Unfortunately, continuous frequencyGPR has some severe limitations when it comes to seeing in harsh environmentssuch as in an underground mine. New research, through a project withthe European Space Agency has led to a novel “stepped frequency” radarwhich is under evaluation as a tool to identify fractures in sofirock potashmines in Saskatchewan.Fracture detection is essential when determining how much support toapply to a tunnel roof in order to avoid collapse. The key is in determiningthe right balance between costly and time-consuming support and efficienttunnel development. The proposed GPR technology is a tool to quickly determinethe stability of the rock, and therefore the amount of stability supportrequired.Stepped-frequency (SF) GPR shows much promise to increase the efficiency,safety and profitability of mines in Canada and around the world. thorder to validate prior findings, this project will continue with the conceptprovingphase of using SFR in softrock mines, and identify through researchhow the technology (software and hardware) can be adapted for hardrockmines. Once completed, this research will provide the groundwork to investigateother applications such as railroad ballast stability monitoring, miningexploration, rock fall hazard mapping and snow I ice depth mapping foravalanche hazard assessment and victim rescue.Research results will be used to establish design criteria for the constructionof application-specific prototypes and determine if there is a market
