96Kalpdrum PassiIncremental Maintenance of XML SchemasA grant of $14,000 per year.Une subvention de 14 000 $ par année.Discovery Grant – Subvention à la découverteXML (eXtensible Markup Language) is a new standardfor data representation and exchange on the Internet.XML provides tags on data elements, whichidentify the meaning of data, rather than specifyinghow the data should be formatted, as in HTML.The nature of data on the web and the flexibility ofXML have resulted in data encoded in XML’s beingsemi-structured. The availability of large amounts ofheterogeneous distributed data necessitates integrating data from multiplesources. The data might be stored in different formats in different companies. Some of the formats include browser formats (HTML); database formats(relational and object-oriented models); and legacy data. The integration, transformation and translation of such data are increasingly important formodern information systems and e-commerce applications. XML providesa common platform for integration and exchange of data for the differentformats. We provide a methodology to integrate data from various sources usingXML. It is not enough to provide a mechanism for integration alone as thismight be a one-time operation. The data might change at the various localsources and it is very expensive and time consuming to update the integrateddata from scratch. It is cost effective to maintain the integrated data incrementallyrather than redoing the operation again. We propose to address thisproblem as part of this research.
