Materials play a decisive role in our society,industry, and economy. The performance of materials in their variousapplications is essentially governed by their thermal properties. Differentialscanning calorimetry is a fast and accurate method to determine the thermalproperties of various materials.In this proposal we are urgently requesting funds to purchase a PerkinElmerDifferential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC). This piece of equipmentis requested to support multidisciplinary research programs on advanced materials,including polyolefin materials, water soluble polymers, inorganic nanoporousmaterials, and biomaterials, at Laurentian University. It will beextensively utilized for the characterization of thermal properties of the variousmaterials developed in our research groups.This requested equipment will be the first of its kind both at LaurentianUniversity and in the region of Northern Ontario. Its acquisition is essential toour multidisciplinary materials research programs at Laurentian Universityand is also important for the training of highly qualified materials researchersin Northern Ontario.
