This proposal is intended to contributeto these efforts by investigating the use of dissolved gas technology inthe mineral processing industry. Recent test work conducted by the applicantshowed that this technology has the potential of improving mineral recoveriesand thereby increasing revenues in the processing of many ores, including avariety of sulphide ores, coal and gold ores. The dissolved gas method involvesfirst dissolving a gas in the ore pulp under pressure and then releasingthe pressure. During the depressurization process, dissolved gas comes outof solution in the form of fine bubbles, which tend to nucleate or precipitateon mineral surfaces. This phenomenon can help improve, in particular, therecovery of fine particles in flotation processes. Studies by others have shownthat conventional flotation is inefficient below a particle size of about 10-15microns, while many ores processed today contain significant amounts of materialin these sizes. The difficulty of recovering fine particles by flotation hasbeen attributed mainly to the inability of such particles to effectively collidewith and attach to gas bubbles, due to their small mass and low momentum.Dissolved gas method eliminates this problem by allowing the bubblesto form directly on particle surfaces. In gold ore processing, dissolved gasbubbles could enhance cyanide leaching rates by promoting a more intimategas-solid-liquid contact.
