Studies of animalsat the extremes of their range limits (e.g., northernand southern distribution limits) can provide insightinto how they may respond to global climate change.My research relies on the study of animals, particularlyreptiles, in their natural environment, using radio telemetry and markrecapturetechniques. I use field-collected data to test basic questions fromlife history theory and to examine the effects of environmental conditions onfitness. For example, I am interested in how variation in body size affects individualfitness, and in the environmental and behavioural factors that affectreproductive frequency and sexual size dimorphism. My work also describesseasonal activity patterns, habitat use, and home-range size for use in statusassessment of reptiles being considered for listing as Species at Risk. Afuture avenue of research will integrate behavioural and physiological datato examine bioenergetic adaptations (e.g., ways to save energy) at environmentalextremes using spotted turtles (Clemmys guttata) at two field sitesat opposite limits of the species’ distribution: Ontario and South Carolina,where I have been conducting research for several years. In sum, my researchprogram examines how animals deal with stressful environments, includingthose that occur naturally and as a result of human activities. Furthermore,the work tests key concepts and questions that will advance knowledge inthe field of evolutionary ecology, in addition to providing essential data forconservation programs for Canada’s reptiles.
