This is why we witness a pursuing ofcorporeality in both Moby-Dick and The Scarlet Letter. However, as Sharon Cameron argues inThe Corporeal Self: Allegories of the Body in Melville and Hawthorne, “[i]f the central fiction ofMoby-Dick is that the dismemberments of which Melville writes are literal and of monster bodies,the central fiction of Hawthorne’s tales is that the dismemberments are allegorical and are ofhuman bodies” (80).As I argued previously, the figurative exhumation of the residues of the <strong>de</strong>ad fathers, themissed encounter with the Real i.e., with the inarticulate past of Puritan America or the archive,ma<strong>de</strong> it possible for Hawthorne to carry on the legacy of the Father. In The Lacanian Subject:Between Language and Jouissance, Bruce Fink un<strong>de</strong>rstands the trauma of the Real as the residuethat is not overwritten by the Symbolic:One of the faces of the real that we <strong>de</strong>al with in psychoanalysis is trauma. If we think ofthe real as everything that has yet to be symbolized, language no doubt never completelytransforms the real, never drains all of the real into the symbolic or<strong>de</strong>r; a residuum isalways left.
