In fact, as Freud and Lacan argue, all letters, all signifiers, allsymptoms are essential to the psychoanalytic experience and to experience writ large. It is worthnoting that the triad of the Real, Imaginary, and Symbolic reproduces itself endlessly. Asexplained by Fink:We can think of the real as being progressively symbolized in the course of a child's life,less and less of that “first,” “original" real (call it R1) being left behind, though it cannever all be drained away, neutralized, or killed. There is thus always a remainder whichpersists alongside the symbolic. We can, however, also show that the symbolic order itselfgives rise to a "second-order" real. (27; emphasis original)This means that we have a pre-symbolic (before the letter) Real and a post-symbolic (after theletter) Real. The first instance of the Real (R1) leaves a residuum in the symbolic, whichgenerates, due to the plethora of missed encounters between its elements, the second instance ofthe Real (R2)a Real that is characterized by the impossibilities and failures of the Symbolic.We end up having the Real Real (the sense of horror in the September 11 events or in horrormovies), the Symbolic Real (in which signifiers are reduced to mere abstractions), and theImaginary Real (the unrepresentable Thingthe object cause of desire/horrorthat slides in theReal in attempt to present the impossible).
