SECTIONGDIGESTIVESYSTEMThe main organs of the digestive system <strong>for</strong>m a muscular tube extending from the lips to the anus.This tube is open at both ends and is referred to as the alimentary canal or the gastrointestinal (GI)tract.Organs which compose the GI tract are the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine,colon, rectum and anus. There are other accessory organs and structures derived from the primitivegut and located in either the main digestive tract or opening into it. These include the tongue, teeth,gums, salivary glands, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, liver, and appendix. The principal parts of thedigestive system are shown in Figure 19 below.Figure 19.
