PenisThe penis consists of erectile and connective tissue sheathed in skin. There are three distinctbands of the erectile tissue within the penis: The two corpora cavemosa and the single corpusspongiosum. At the distal end is the glans penis over which there is a double fold of skin called theprepuce or <strong>for</strong>eskin. The penis contains the penile (spongy or cavernous) segment of the urethrawhich is the terminal duct <strong>for</strong> both the urinary and the reproductive tracts in the male.The penile blood supply is from the internal iliac and femoral arteries by way of the pudendalarteries. Blood drains to the internal iliac veins. During erection, the blood vessels of the penisundergo a change; the arteries become dilated and the veins constricted.The penis serves two purposes:• An excretory organ <strong>for</strong> liquid wastes• The male copulatory organ321
