Ji.WarningNever issue commands when two disks with the same name are on line.Even if you specify the correct drives by their volume numbers, thesystem may operate on the wrong disk (usually the disk in the highernumbered drive). If the operation involves updating the disk's directory, the system may store the wrong disk's directory onto your disk, makingthe files originally on the disk inaccessible. The same thing may happenif you replace the disk in a drive with another disk with the same volumename. The only exception is when you copy a whole disk using theTransfer command; this is not the same as inserting two disks with thesame name; and you should not leave them on line together after thevolume copy is complete.Shorthand Volume NamesYou can use an asterisk (")to specify the volume name of the system disklast used to startup Pascal. This disk also becomes the prefix volumeunless otherwise set by the Prefix command. You can use a colon(:) tospecify the volume name of the prefix volume. If you specify a filenamewithout a volume name (null volume specification), or if you use only acolon(:), the Apple Pascal system supplies the volume name of the Prefixvolume. You can check the current system volume and prefix volume byusing the Volumes command in the Filer.Starting up the system sets the Prefix to the name of the system disk.Thereafter, the prefix volume can be changed at any time by using thePrefix command. Usually, you will set the Prefix to the volume name of thedisk with which you are currently working so that you can avoid having totype its name repeatedly. However, the Prefix can also be set to othervolumes, such as PRINTER:.To learn how to refer to the volume which contains a particular programfrom within that program using the percent(%) prefix, see Chapter 10 inPart III.Il-28Chapter 3: The Filer
