DirectionThe Replace command operates exactly like the Find command in responseto the set direction.Repeats FactorYou can use the repeat-factor with the Replace command in exactly thesame way as you can with the Find command.Literal or Token SearchReplace uses the Literal and Token search modes exactly as does the Findcommand.Unease OptionThe Unease option works with the Replace command in exactly the sameway as with the Find command.Target Strings and DelimitersThe Editor has two string storage variables. The first string variable, called or by the prompt line, contains the target string, andis used both by the Find command and by the Replace command. The targetstring is the sequence of characters that will be searched for by the Findcommand, or searched for and replaced by the Replace command. Thesecond string, used only by the Replace command, is called by theReplace prompt line and is the substitute string. In the Replace commandonly, the substitute string is the sequence of characters that will replace thetarget string when the target string is found. To allow the target and substitute strings to contain almost any characters(including RETURN characters), there are special rules for typing eachstring. In particular, you must set off each string with characters calleddelimiters. Both delimiters of a string must be the same character. Onedelimiter must precede the first character of the string, and the samedelimiter must follow the last character of the string. The Editor allows almost any normal printing character that is not a letteror a number to be a delimiter as long as it does not occur in the stringdelimited. Thus you can choose the delimiter. The most common choice isthe slash (/)because it is a lowercase character that is not commonly foundin text, and it is easy to type.II-114Chapter 4: The Editor
