Once the Filer has been summoned, it resides entirely in the computer'smemory. Thus, you can invoke the Filer, and then remove all system disksfrom the drives in order to use both drives (on a two-drive system) forsource and destination disks during a transfer. Just remember to replace thePascal system disk in the startup drive before using the Quit command toexit from the Filer.A. Warning I You should avoid having two disks on line at the same time with the samevolume name. Change the name of one of them if you want to transferfiles between them. You can change the name back again later. We can hardly overemphasize the importance of making backup copies ofall your files: It should never be necessary for you to have to spend hours orweeks recreating some piece of work that was lost to spilled coffee on adisk. The Transfer command makes backing up too easy for you to riskhaving no backups. Here's an example of making a backup file.ExampleSuppose you want to transfer the file STARGAZER.TEXT from diskMYDISK to disk BACKUP .Prompt: Transfer what file ?Response: MYD! SK: STARGAZER. TEXTWhen you press RETURN, the system checks to be sure that the specifiedsource disk is in one of the disk drives. If MYDISK: is not in any drive, youwill see the messageMYDISK: -No such volume on-line If the source disk is found in a drive, the system then checks to be sure thespecified file is on that disk. If the disk MYDISK contains no file namedSTARGAZER.TEXT, you will see the messageMYDISK:STARGAZER.TEXT -File not found In either case, you will be returned to the outer Filer level. Just insert thecorrect source disk in any drive and type T again.Let's assume the system succeeds in finding the source disk and file. TheFiler asks you to specify the destination for the transfer:Prompt:To where?Response: BACKUP: TEMP. TEXTYou could also have given both source and destination specifications in thefirst response, separated by a comma.11-42Chapter 3: The Filer
