Blue whale was firstly recognised by Gruvel (1925).There was no specific study focusing on marine cetaceans along Vietnam 3,260 km <strong>of</strong> coast lineuntil 1995 (Smith et al. 1995). Two species <strong>of</strong> small marine mammals was described by Bui DinhChung (1964) in <strong>the</strong> Gulf <strong>of</strong> Tonkin and <strong>the</strong> dugong has been recorded several times from <strong>the</strong>waters <strong>of</strong> South Vietnam (Tran Ngoc Loi 192 ; van Bree and Duguy).In March and April 1995 <strong>the</strong> first marine mammals study was conducted in South-Central Part,Mekong River Delta and Phu Quoc Island (Gulf <strong>of</strong> Thailand) areas <strong>of</strong> Vietnam. The checklistconsists 16 species <strong>of</strong> marine mammals was <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> this study. In October 1999 and April2000 <strong>the</strong> same study was out in <strong>the</strong> Gulf <strong>of</strong> Tonkin, North Vietnam with ten species was recognized.Both study was conducted by IUCN SSC Cetacean Specialist Group, Ocean Park ConservationFoundation toge<strong>the</strong>r with Vietnamese scientists from different national institutes.Recently some species <strong>of</strong> marine cetaceans with individuals stranded or caught by fishing net,reorganized by <strong>the</strong> authors <strong>of</strong> this report was added. Status <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dugong Dugong dugon in Vietnam and Cambodia andRecommendations for its ConservationCox, Nick JWWF Indochina, 53 Tran Phu, Hanoi, IPO Box 151, Hanoi, Vietnam; e-mail: nick@wwfvn.org.vnAs with similar relic dugong populations scattered around SE Asia, very little reliable informationis available about <strong>the</strong> status and abundance <strong>of</strong> dugongs in Vietnam and Cambodia. Recentsurveys undertaken in Con Dao National Park in <strong>the</strong> south <strong>of</strong> Vietnam have revealed importantinformation about behaviour and seagrass habitat visitation on <strong>the</strong> local scale, but only anecdotalinformation is available for all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r sites that could potentially support small dugongpopulations.Similar anecdotal evidence collected from <strong>the</strong> Gulf <strong>of</strong> Thailand suggests that small groups <strong>of</strong>dugongs from a larger meta-population may be moving between habitats along <strong>the</strong> coastlineshared by Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Urgent collaborative research is needed in orderthat a dugong conservation action plan can be formulated.Given <strong>the</strong> urgent situation, it is recommended that satellite tagging be used in conjunctionwith conventional survey methods to ascertain movement patterns in relation to key seagrasssites. Also recommended is <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dugong as a flagship species for raisingconservation awareness at <strong>the</strong> national and international level, and as an indicator speciesfor healthy seagrass habitats. Building <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> local communities, national researchinstitutions and governments is critical if <strong>the</strong> dugong is to remain an important part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> marinebiodiversity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region.136 CMS Technical Series Publication Nº 9 - 2005
