The Breeding Ground Distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Humpback Whales (Megapteranovaeangliae) in <strong>the</strong> Western North Pacific and Their Trans-Movementsamong <strong>the</strong> Ogasawara Islands, <strong>the</strong> Ryukyu Islands and <strong>the</strong> Babuyan Islands,PhilippinesYamaguchi, M. 1 , Acebes, J.M. 2 and Miyamura, Y. 3(1) Ogasawara Marine Center, Chichi-jima, Ogasawara, Tokyo 100-2101 Japane-mail: manapua@f4.dion.ne.jp(2) WWF-Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City 1101 Philippines(3) Heart Land, 105 Zamami, Okinawa 901-3402 JapanThe Ogasawara Islands (27°N, 142°E) and Ryukyu (Kerama) Islands (26°N, 127°E), which locatein <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn part <strong>of</strong> Japan, have been known as major breeding grounds for <strong>the</strong> humpbackwhales (Megaptera novaeangliae). It is approved by continuous researches showing existence<strong>of</strong> newborn calves and mating pods, and re-sightings <strong>of</strong> individual whales in <strong>the</strong> same seasonor over seasons proved by fluke photo identification. The biological research on this species hasbeen operated in <strong>the</strong> Ogasawara and Ryukyu Islands since 1989 and in <strong>the</strong> Babuyan Islands,nor<strong>the</strong>rn Luzon, Philippines since 1999 respectively. During 1989-1994, 490 individuals wereidentified in <strong>the</strong> Ogasawara Islands (including photos taken in 1987-88) and 89 in <strong>the</strong> RyukyuIslands, and 28 individuals were found in both waters. The dense interchanges <strong>of</strong> speciesbetween <strong>the</strong>se two regions indicates that <strong>the</strong> species that migrate to both regions belong to <strong>the</strong>same population so-called “Asian stock”. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, to determine <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn margin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Asian stock distribution, sighting surveys were conducted in <strong>the</strong> water <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mariana Islands in1995 and 1996. Although no humpback whales were sighted in those surveys, some sightingswere reported by residents with photographs as evidence. Additionally, five <strong>of</strong> ten whales, whichhave been identified in <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philippines since 1999, were matched to <strong>the</strong> onesin Ogasawara-Ryukyu ID photo collections. Of <strong>the</strong>se five whales, three were found in Ogasawara,one was in Ryukyu and one was in both regions. Although it is assumed that <strong>the</strong> humpbackwhales in <strong>the</strong> breeding ground <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> western North Pacific are still densely distributed in <strong>the</strong>Ogasawara and Ryukyu Islands, <strong>the</strong>ir recent distribution extends to <strong>the</strong> waters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philippinesand <strong>the</strong> Mariana Islands.<strong>Second</strong> <strong>Workshop</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Biology and Conservation <strong>of</strong> Small Cetaceans and Dugongs <strong>of</strong> SE Asia 159
Songs <strong>of</strong> a Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) in TaiwanYu, Hsin Yi; Mok, Hin KiuInstitute <strong>of</strong> Marine Biology, National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwane-mail ula0601@yahoo.com.twThere were 1~60 humpback whales whaled every year during 1920~1967 in sou<strong>the</strong>rn Taiwan.However, only a few sights were recorded in <strong>the</strong> past twenty years. A male humpback whale wassighted on <strong>the</strong> east coast <strong>of</strong> Taiwan in March, 2000. His songs recorded during between threedaytailing were analysed. There were five <strong>the</strong>mes and nine units in <strong>the</strong> songs, a complete songduration lasted about 14.2 minutes. The maximal sound pressure level was 189.6 dB (n=32, SEM=2.81). The acoustic characters (i.e., signal duration, time between two signals, <strong>the</strong>me duration,fundamental frequency) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> songs were not significant different. A visual comparison <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>spectrograms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sound units from this particalar whale with those northwest Pacific Oceanshowed similarity. This individual was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> population in <strong>the</strong> northwest PacificOcean. This conclusion was also supported by <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> Photo-ID <strong>of</strong> its fluke.160 CMS Technical Series Publication Nº 9 - 2005
