Population Status and Bycatches <strong>of</strong> Cetaceans in Chinese WatersZhou, KaiyaInstitute <strong>of</strong> Genetic Resources, Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing 210097, China;e-mail kyzhounj@jlonline.comThirty five species <strong>of</strong> cetaceans have been reported from Chinese waters. The population <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>baiji (Lipotes vexillifer), Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides asiaeorientalis),Pacific humpbacked dolphin (Sousa chinensis) and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiopsaduncus) have been estimated. The habitat degraded as a result <strong>of</strong> extensive developmentalong <strong>the</strong> coast. Pollution assessment data indicated that <strong>the</strong>re was a drop in water quality inBohai Bay; Laizhou Bay; <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn Yellow Sea; Jiaozhou Bay; <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> Jiangsu coast; HangzhouBay; <strong>the</strong> Yangtze River estuary; <strong>the</strong> Zhoushan Fishing Ground and <strong>the</strong> Pearl River estuary. Mainpollutants in Chinese coastal waters included inorganic nitrogen, inorganic phosphorous and oil.Fisheries resources have declined dramatically in <strong>the</strong> coastal zone. By-catches <strong>of</strong> cetacean in <strong>the</strong>coastal fisheries include finless porpoise, long-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus capensis),bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops sp.), pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), false killerwhale (Pseudoraca crassidens), Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus), common minke whale(Balaenoptera acutorostrata), and fin whale (B. physalus ). In 1994, <strong>the</strong> annual incidental catches<strong>of</strong> small cetacean in coastal waters south <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yangtze River were about 3045±2120 individuals,<strong>of</strong> which more than seventy per cent were <strong>the</strong> finless porpoise. A series <strong>of</strong> laws and provisionsto protect wildlife, including cetaceans, have been enacted at various levels. However, surveysto assess cetacean abundance, and impacts <strong>of</strong> habitat degradation and by-catch to cetaceans arerecommended.<strong>Second</strong> <strong>Workshop</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Biology and Conservation <strong>of</strong> Small Cetaceans and Dugongs <strong>of</strong> SE Asia 161
