It is believed that Huang wasimpris<strong>on</strong>ed for report<strong>in</strong>g and giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terviews to foreign journalists about protestsstaged by families <strong>of</strong> schoolchildren killed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sichuan earthquake <strong>in</strong> May 2008.Huang was kidnapped <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> street by a number <strong>of</strong> unidentified men <strong>on</strong> June 10,2008, and later discovered to have been deta<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> police. Dur<strong>in</strong>g Huang’sdetenti<strong>on</strong>, he was barred from access<strong>in</strong>g his lawyers for over three m<strong>on</strong>ths after hewas first taken <strong>in</strong>to custody. Liang Y<strong>on</strong>gh<strong>on</strong>g ( ), a villager and former soldier who has been active <strong>in</strong>fight<strong>in</strong>g corrupti<strong>on</strong> am<strong>on</strong>g village <strong>of</strong>ficials s<strong>in</strong>ce May 2006, was c<strong>on</strong>victed <strong>of</strong>“illegally assembl<strong>in</strong>g a crowd to dem<strong>on</strong>strate" and sentenced to three years <strong>of</strong>impris<strong>on</strong>ment <strong>in</strong> Tanhe Village, Liuwang Town, R<strong>on</strong>g County, Yul<strong>in</strong> City, GuangxiProv<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>on</strong> July 15. Liang’s family was not <strong>in</strong>formed <strong>of</strong> his sentence until August 13.It is believed that Liang was retaliated aga<strong>in</strong>st for lead<strong>in</strong>g a group <strong>of</strong> villagers toprotest aga<strong>in</strong>st corrupti<strong>on</strong> am<strong>on</strong>g Tanhe village cadres <strong>on</strong> November 12, 2008. Priorto <strong>the</strong> protest, Liang had repeatedly submitted applicati<strong>on</strong>s to hold dem<strong>on</strong>strati<strong>on</strong>s,but <strong>the</strong>y were ei<strong>the</strong>r denied or ignored. Liu Xiaobo ( ), Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s best-known dissident <strong>in</strong>tellectual, was c<strong>on</strong>victed <strong>of</strong>“<strong>in</strong>cit<strong>in</strong>g subversi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> state power” <strong>on</strong> December 25 by <strong>the</strong> Beij<strong>in</strong>g No. 1 MunicipalCourt. Liu was sentenced to eleven years <strong>in</strong> pris<strong>on</strong>, with two years’ deprivati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong>political rights. Liu’s c<strong>on</strong>victi<strong>on</strong> was based entirely <strong>on</strong> his writ<strong>in</strong>gs, n<strong>on</strong>violentexpressi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> his own op<strong>in</strong>i<strong>on</strong>s. Al<strong>on</strong>g with Charter 08, which he played an<strong>in</strong>strumental role <strong>in</strong> draft<strong>in</strong>g, six articles written by Liu between October 2005 andJuly 2007 were cited as evidence and used to c<strong>on</strong>vict him. Liu was deta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>on</strong>December 8, 2008, and until June 23, 2009, he was held under “residentialsurveillance” at an undisclosed locati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> Beij<strong>in</strong>g.
