In February, Tan released a proposalcall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> netizens to travel to Sichuan Prov<strong>in</strong>ce to compile a list <strong>of</strong> students whodied <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> earthquake and to <strong>in</strong>vestigate <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> collapsed school build<strong>in</strong>gs, aswell as to assist parents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se children <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fight for justice. Wang,65, is a veteran democracy activist whose activism can be traced back to <strong>the</strong>Democracy Wall movement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late 1970s. In 2004, Wang was deta<strong>in</strong>ed for twoweeks after he drafted and submitted to <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese government a Draft Law <strong>on</strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Political Parties. In 2005, he was deta<strong>in</strong>ed for six m<strong>on</strong>ths for organiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a Democracy Party’s Zhejiang Chapter. In August 2006, Wang was aga<strong>in</strong>deta<strong>in</strong>ed for a m<strong>on</strong>th for writ<strong>in</strong>g articles criticiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> repressi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> religiousfreedom <strong>in</strong> Zhejiang Prov<strong>in</strong>ce. Wang Y<strong>on</strong>ghang ( ), a former lawyer from Dalian City, Lia<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g Prov<strong>in</strong>ce,was seized <strong>on</strong> July 4, formally arrested <strong>on</strong> August 10, held <strong>in</strong>communicado, and tried<strong>in</strong> secret <strong>on</strong> October 16 <strong>in</strong> a closed court without a lawyer present before be<strong>in</strong>gsentenced to seven years <strong>in</strong> pris<strong>on</strong> for “us<strong>in</strong>g a cult to damage <strong>the</strong> implementati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> law" <strong>on</strong> November 27. Wang is an outspoken advocate for <strong>the</strong> rights <strong>of</strong> FalunG<strong>on</strong>g practiti<strong>on</strong>ers; he was c<strong>on</strong>victed for accept<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terviews and publish<strong>in</strong>g articles<strong>on</strong> foreign websites <strong>in</strong> additi<strong>on</strong> to defend<strong>in</strong>g Falun G<strong>on</strong>g practiti<strong>on</strong>ers <strong>in</strong> court. WhenWang was taken <strong>in</strong>to police custody <strong>on</strong> July 4, he was severely beaten, caus<strong>in</strong>gfractures <strong>in</strong> his right ankle. Xie Changfa ( ), a human rights and democracy activist from Changsha City,Hunan Prov<strong>in</strong>ce, was c<strong>on</strong>victed <strong>of</strong> "subversi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> state power" and sentenced to 13years <strong>in</strong> pris<strong>on</strong> by Changsha's Intermediate Court <strong>on</strong> September 1. The trial wasattended by fellow activists and Xie's bro<strong>the</strong>r, who protested <strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> and vowedto appeal. Xie, who was seized <strong>in</strong> late June 2008, is a veteran democracy activist andhas been repeatedly deta<strong>in</strong>ed and <strong>in</strong>carcerated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past for n<strong>on</strong>violent politicalactivities associated with <strong>the</strong> banned Ch<strong>in</strong>a Democracy Party.发 长 谢 51
